You get WETH in one of two ways: buy ETH and wrap it 1:1 through the WETH9 contract, or swap a token you already hold for WETH on a decentralized exchange. Exchanges and card services sell ETH, not WETH: on October 11, 2026, all 19 venues behind the 300 largest WETH markets on Ethereum tracked by CoinGecko were decentralized exchanges or DEX aggregators. The rule that follows: if you start from fiat, buy ETH and wrap it; if you start from another token, swap it for WETH directly.
- No order books: the 300 largest WETH markets on Ethereum listed by CoinGecko all sat on decentralized exchanges and DEX aggregators on October 11, 2026; Uniswap v3 alone carried 62.8% of their 24-hour volume.
- ETH is the liquid side: ETH traded $5.96B in the same 24 hours against $150.6M for WETH on Ethereum, a ratio of about 40 to 1 (CoinGecko, October 11, 2026).
- Wrapping is the cheap step: a deposit() on Ethereum mainnet cost $0.08-$0.37 on September 29, 2026, and under $0.01 on Arbitrum and Base (Etherscan, Arbiscan, Basescan).
- Base outtraded Ethereum: WETH on Base turned over $203.6M in 24 hours on October 11, 2026, 1.35 times the $150.6M of WETH on Ethereum mainnet.
Why You Usually Buy ETH, Not WETH
WETH is a wrapper, not a separate asset to buy: every WETH is one ETH held by the WETH9 contract, and anyone can mint it with deposit() at a 1:1 rate. Exchanges therefore list and pay out ETH, and card on-ramps sell ETH, because the wrapped form adds nothing to a balance that stays on the exchange.
Where WETH does trade is inside DeFi. The pools of Uniswap, Curve, PancakeSwap and other DEXs pair WETH with USDC, USDT, WBTC and hundreds of tokens, because a DEX contract can only move ERC-20 tokens. On October 11, 2026, CoinGecko’s 300 largest WETH markets on Ethereum sat on 19 venues - Uniswap v2, v3 and v4, Curve, Sushiswap, Balancer, PancakeSwap and other DEXs and aggregators - and none of them was a centralized exchange.
The practical result: ETH is the asset you buy with money, WETH is the form you put it in before a smart contract uses it. See what WETH is and why ETH needs a wrapper for the mechanics.
How to Buy ETH and Wrap It
Buying ETH and wrapping it is the route from fiat and the first of the ways to get WETH. It takes two transactions at most: the purchase, which lands ETH on your address, and the wrap, which turns part of it into WETH on the same address.
- Buy ETH on the network where you will use WETH: an exchange withdrawal or a card on-ramp can send ETH to Ethereum mainnet, Base or Arbitrum; pick the network of the app that needs the WETH.
- Keep part of it as ETH: the wrap and every later transaction pay their fee in ETH, never in WETH.
- Wrap the rest: in a wallet with a built-in wrap, a DEX interface, or directly on the WETH9 contract through the explorer. Gem Wallet, for example, buys ETH with a card through on-ramp providers and wraps it into WETH inside the app, routing the call through its built-in DEX aggregator.
- Check the result: WETH appears on the same address in the next block; if the wallet does not list it, add the token by the contract address of that network.
The wrap itself has no price and no slippage. The full walkthrough, including the call on the explorer, is in ETH to WETH.
How to Swap Another Token for WETH
Swapping is the route when you already hold a token such as USDC or USDT. A DEX sells your token into a pool and returns WETH, at the pool’s price and with its fee.
- Hold a little ETH on the same network: the swap is a transaction, and the fee is paid in ETH.
- Approve the token once: the DEX contract needs permission to move your USDC or USDT; that is a separate transaction before the first swap of that token (WETH approvals).
- Choose the pool or let the router choose: Uniswap v3 pools carry fee tiers of 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.3% and 1% (Uniswap documentation), and the router picks the pool that returns the most WETH.
- Set slippage and confirm: the received WETH depends on the pool price at execution, unlike a wrap.
A swap that outputs native ETH adds an unwrap at the end; asking for WETH as the output skips that step.
Buy ETH and Wrap or Swap: The Two Routes Compared
The two routes end with the same WETH; they differ in what you start from and what you pay. Figures as of September 29 and October 11, 2026.
| Parameter | Buy ETH, then wrap | Swap a token for WETH |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Fiat or ETH on an exchange | A token in your wallet (USDC, USDT, other) |
| Price of the WETH step | 1:1, no market price | Pool price at execution |
| Fee of the WETH step | Network fee only: $0.08-$0.37 mainnet, under $0.01 on L2 | Network fee plus pool fee (0.01%-1%) |
| Extra transactions | None | One approval per token, the first time |
| Slippage | None | Depends on pool depth and trade size |
Two cases break the general rule: a token that has no direct WETH pool is routed through one or more intermediate tokens, which adds a pool fee per hop; and a wallet or router that sells you WETH “directly” is in practice running one of these two routes for you.
Where to Get WETH Cheaply: Ethereum, Base or Arbitrum
The network matters more than the route. On September 29, 2026 the cheapest wrap on Ethereum mainnet cost 0.00002948 ETH, 25 times the Arbitrum wrap (0.00000119 ETH) and 173 times the cheapest Base wrap (0.00000017 ETH).
WETH on each network is a separate token at its own address: 0xC02a…56Cc2 on Ethereum, 0x4200…0006 on Base, 0x82aF…Bab1 on Arbitrum One. Buying WETH on Base gives you Base WETH, which a mainnet app cannot see. Network specifics: WETH on Base, WETH on Arbitrum.
What to Check Before You Buy WETH
- Network: the exchange withdrawal, the wallet and the app must all be on the same network; ETH sent to Base does not become WETH on Ethereum.
- Gas in ETH: keep ETH unwrapped for fees; a wallet that holds only WETH cannot send any transaction.
- Exchange deposits: many exchanges credit native ETH only, so WETH sent to an exchange deposit address may not be credited (WETH not showing).
- The real contract: tokens named “Wrapped Ether” at other addresses, aWETH and bridged versions are not WETH9; compare the address with the contract addresses list before you swap.
Start from the network you will use, buy ETH there or bring a token, and wrap or swap once; the WETH contract addresses tell you which WETH you hold.
