WETH that does not show in a wallet is almost always on the chain, not lost: the balance lives in the WETH contract of one network, and the wallet is looking at another network, does not list that token, or is showing a different “WETH” contract. On October 2, 2026 the name WETH covered three separate contracts with 2,031,131 WETH on Ethereum, 257,880 on Base and 104,962 on Arbitrum (on-chain reads) - three balances that a wallet tracks one by one. The rule: check the explorer of the right network first; if the explorer shows the WETH on your address, the funds are fine and only the wallet’s view needs fixing.

Key takeaways
  • Explorer first: Etherscan, Basescan or Arbiscan show the true balance of an address in each WETH contract; a wallet only displays what it is told to track.
  • Same address, separate balances: an EVM address is identical on every network, but WETH on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum are three contracts - 2,031,131, 257,880 and 104,962 WETH on October 2, 2026.
  • Most holders are not on mainnet: Base's WETH had 5,055,519 holders (September 20, 2026) against 3,322,783 on Ethereum (October 2, 2026) - 1.5 times more, so a wallet set to Ethereum misses WETH that many users actually hold on Base.
  • Wrapping takes one block: a wrap on Ethereum lands in 15-60 seconds; if WETH is still missing after that, the cause is the view, the network or a failed transaction.

The Six Causes at a Glance

Symptom Likely cause How to check Fix
WETH missing right after a wrap or a swap wallet on another network network selector in the wallet switch to the network of the transaction
Explorer shows WETH, wallet does not token not added to the wallet token tab of your address on the explorer add the token by contract address
Explorer shows no new WETH transaction failed or still pending transaction status on the explorer fix the cause (usually gas) and resend
A “WETH” appears with odd value or no price different contract: bridged token, lookalike or scam contract address on the explorer compare with the official address list
WETH left the wallet but did not reach an exchange deposit sent on a network the exchange does not credit exchange’s deposit network list contact the exchange with the transaction hash
WETH hidden in the token list wallet hides small or unpriced tokens wallet’s hidden-tokens or spam settings show the token or add it manually

The sections below take each row in turn.

1. The Wallet Is on Another Network

The most common cause. WETH bought, wrapped or received on Base is invisible to a wallet set to Ethereum, and the other way round, because each network’s WETH is a separate contract (WETH on Base, WETH on Arbitrum). In a multi-network wallet such as Gem Wallet, which supports 100+ networks under one recovery phrase, pick the network of the transaction before looking for the token: WETH on Base and WETH on Ethereum are different assets with different balances.

2. The Token Is Not Added

Many wallets list only tokens they already know. If the explorer’s token tab shows WETH on your address but the wallet does not, add the token by its contract address on that network: 0xC02aaA39b223FE8D0A0e5C4F27eAD9083C756Cc2 on Ethereum, 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000006 on Base and Optimism, 0x82aF49447D8a07e3bd95BD0d56f35241523fBab1 on Arbitrum One. The full list is in the contract addresses table. Symbol WETH and 18 decimals are filled in by the contract.

3. The Transaction Failed or Is Still Pending

A wrap is one deposit() call; until it is mined there is no WETH, and if it fails there never will be. The most frequent failure is a fee problem: the address did not keep enough ETH to pay gas, or the gas limit was set too low. A failed wrap leaves the ETH on the address minus the fee already spent (ETH to WETH, WETH and gas). An unwrap that “lost” WETH usually succeeded: withdraw() burns WETH and raises the ETH balance by the same amount, so look at ETH, not WETH (how to unwrap WETH).

4. It Is a Different Token Called WETH

Several tokens carry the WETH name or symbol and none of them is interchangeable with the canonical one:

  • Bridged WETH: WETH.e on Avalanche or the Binance-peg “ETH” on BNB Chain are separate contracts issued by bridges (what wrapped tokens are).
  • Receipt tokens: aWETH from Aave is a lending position, not WETH (lookalikes table).
  • Scam copies: any contract can call itself Wrapped Ether; a token that arrived unasked, with no price or with an odd balance, is almost certainly one. Do not approve or trade it (what an approval allows).

5. The WETH Went to an Exchange on the Wrong Network

Exchanges credit a token only on the networks they list for it. WETH sent on Arbitrum to an address the exchange watches only on Ethereum arrives on-chain but is not credited. The transaction hash and the network are what the exchange’s support needs; many exchanges also do not credit WETH at all, in which case unwrapping to ETH before sending avoids the problem.

6. The Wallet Hides the Token

Some wallets hide tokens below a value threshold, tokens without price data, or tokens flagged by a spam filter. The canonical WETH has price data on every major network, so this mostly affects small balances or new networks; showing hidden tokens or adding WETH manually by address brings it back.

What a Missing WETH Balance Does Not Mean

  • It does not mean the WETH is gone: a balance in a contract cannot disappear without a transaction signed from your address.
  • It does not mean the wallet holds it: the wallet only displays balances; the WETH contract on each network keeps them.
  • It does not mean WETH moved between networks: no network shows another network’s WETH; a cross-chain move always leaves a bridge or swap transaction on the explorer.

WETH not showing FAQ

Almost never. If the explorer of the right network shows the WETH on your address, the funds are there and only the wallet's view is missing; add the token by its contract address or switch the network.
